The background

How did you meet your husband? When did you know he was the one?

We met nine years ago through mutual friends in our hometown. I moved away to Leeds for university so after surviving a three year long distance relationship, I knew he was the one.

How did he propose? Or did you propose? Was it romantic?

He proposed to me at home after cooking me a beautiful meal, our black Labrador wore the ring attached to a dicky bow and came bounding in the room.

The planning

What was the first thing you did when once you were engaged? Find the venue, the dress or the photographer?

I never thought finding my dress would be easy, as I'm a designer myself I can be really indecisive and picky. Strangely I found my dress the very first time I went shopping with my mum and my bridesmaids, I left the changing room and they all cried so I was sold ! Everything els followed the dress, it inspired the look and feel of all the décor.

What style of wedding did you want? Did that change along the way? Did you always know what kind of wedding you’d like?

I knew I wanted it to be small but fun, like a private party feel but I also knew I wanted it to be glamourous. The style of my dress lead to a Gatsby theme, it was very subtle but we both love that 20's art deco style.

Where did you get married? Did the venue have any special significance? Did your venue choice help with developing a theme?

We already had a theme in mind when we started venue hunting but the beautiful landscape and view of the venue's garden gave our wedding a wow factor. The groom and best man arrived by speed boat which was great fun.

Did you have a colour in your theme and how did you bring that colour in to other aspects of your wedding? Like flowers, his suit, bridesmaids.

Flowers were hugely important to me. I originally liked pale pastel tones but after many hours research I opted for deep marsala and pale pinks with lots of greenery. This then lead to the choice of bridesmaid dresses , braces for the grooms men etc.

What was your something new and something old?

I wore my mothers lace garter from her wedding which had a tiny blue bow. My husband gave me a Welsh gold bracelet on the morning of our wedding so I wore that too.

What kind of flowers did you go for and why?

I chose vintage style arrangements with large overflowing foliage, I loved the drama they created.

Dressing for the big day;

When you started looking for ‘The Dress’ – did you have an idea of what you wanted?

I described my dress to the sales assistant before I had even seen it. When she revealed it to me I was lost for words. It was very strange but meant to be !

How many shops did you go to before you found ‘The One’? Was it a quick process or did you see a lot of dresses before the one?

I was there an hour ! It left plenty of time for a celebratory lunch.

Why was your Sabina Motasem dress ‘The One’ for you? Was it your usual style is or was it something completely different?

I think I am always drawn to backless styles because they are so feminine and glamourous but still simple and elegant. The neckline and fabric was perfect for my petite frame, I didn’t want anything to heavy or plunging.

Tell us about how you styled your dress, what did you look for next? Accessories? Shoes? How did you decide the accessories you chose were perfect for your dress?

Because the dress was such a clean and sleek style I wanted to add some old hollywood/ vintage touches. I changed my accessories throughout the wedding, I wore a cathedral veil in champagne lace to match the dress for my ceremony and then attached a pearl back necklace for the evening. My favorite accessory was my original 20's headpiece that was restored for me Abby (Cherished vintage).

What underwear did you find to go with your dress? Did you find anything brilliant that would be great for other brides to know about?

This was my only struggle. It took weeks of searching and lots of wasted attempts online because everything I bought could be seen through the sheer silk. At my final fitting I was about to loose hope when my seamstress suggested sewing cups into the bust of the dress. This worked perfectly for me!

How many bridesmaids did you have? How did you decide which style of dresses to go for that would complement your dress? How did you find them?

I had six ladies in total plus two flower girls. I searched all the usual places for dresses but nothing stood out. In the end I found the plum dresses on the ASOS bridal collection which was great as they were really affordable, my two Maids of Honor wore sequin styles from Virgo's lounge. I loved the mixture of deep plum and the heavy gold beading.
